Google IO 2024 kicked off its annual developer-centric Google I/O event with a bang on Tuesday. The spotlight was on groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), with the introduction of several new AI models and updates to existing infrastructure. One standout feature was the launch of a two million token context window for Gemini 1.5 Pro, now open for developers to explore. Additionally, a faster version of Gemini and the next-gen small language models (SML), Gemma 2, were also unveiled.
The event got off to an exciting start with CEO Sundar Pichai’s big reveal: the launch of a two million token context window for Gemini 1.5 Pro. Earlier this year, Google introduced a one million token context window, but it was limited to developers. Now, it’s open to everyone for a public preview, accessible through Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. However, the exclusive access to the two million token context window is currently available via waitlist to API users and Google Cloud customers.

Google boasts that with a two-million-token context window, their AI model can handle a whopping amount of data in one shot: two hours of video, 22 hours of audio, over 60,000 lines of code, or more than 1.4 million words! Not stopping there, the tech giant has beefed up Gemini 1.5 Pro’s capabilities across the board, from code generation and logical reasoning to planning and understanding images and audio. They’re also weaving this AI magic into their Gemini Advanced and Workspace apps.
